Job Description


The Commodity Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a commodity inventory strategy that supports production need for both Morgan Hill and Fairfield locations for Huntsman, Lonza, Hexion and other major resin materials as necessary. Evaluates market conditions to maintain inventory levels and control costs. Evaluates and recommends suppliers. Manages ongoing relationships with suppliers. Monitors cost, schedule, and scope of assigned commodities to assure best quality at best value on time. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Responsible for purchasing materials and monitoring the movement of materials or products through the production cycle to meet customer requirements.This position uses engineering and production schedules to maintain inventory at planned levels and works to resolve any discrepancies in a timely fashion. The Commodity Manager will exercise solid judgment to make strategic decisions regarding assigned commodity(s) 


Support all Purchasing activities including but not limited to: 

  •  Placement of production material purchase orders, gathering quotes and bids in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. 
  • Ensures that any past due PO’s are rescheduled, understood and reconfirmed on a weekly basis. 
  • Build and manage strong supplier relationships to insure on time delivery, expedite past due orders, manage priorities at suppliers and improve supplier performance. 
  • Ensure supplier compliance with contracts. 
  • Provides monthly forecasts to suppliers on current and projected demand. 
  • Planning and WO issuance for subcontract/outside processing material production runs. 
  • Manage raw material for both MH and FF. Ensure min/max levels are developed using a data-driven methodology. Optimize available on-hand inventory to maximize inventory turns, while enabling the operations team to execute the production schedule without material shortage impacts. 
  • Manage planning parameters for both MH and FF sites to ensure that MRP functions smoothly and properly and provides adequate time for raw material delivery without excess inventory. 
  • Ensure that pricing in AX for both sites is correct per any Long-Term Agreements and revised price lists from suppliers. 
  • Works with Supply Chain Management to review and negotiate Long-Term Agreements. 
  • Ensures that budget pricing for future is in AX as needed. 
  • Manages demand forecast in AX. 
  • Work with cross functional departments (not limited to Production, Receiving, Accounts Payable) to resolve discrepancies and meet business needs. 


  •  Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with a minimum of 5+ years experience as a Commodity Manager or Senior Buyer/Planner in a manufacturing environment (make-to-order manufacturing preferred) 


  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills, ability to work effectively in a team environment 
  • APICS certification beneficial 
  • Strong proficiency with ERP systems and MS Office suite is essential. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics AX is preferable. Has clear understanding of MRP scheduling, BOM structures, Planning, Work Order routing, material/product costing and inventory management. 
  • Strong math skills, with the ability to compile, chart and analyze relevant data for both internal and supplier-facing activities. 
  • Displays leadership qualities, possesses excellent communication skills (oral/written) and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate through all levels of the organization. 
  • Is proactive, a self-starter and is confident and decisive when initiating actions. 
  • Able to negotiate and advocate well, shows tactfulness and tenacity to achieve goals. 
  • Able to utilize an organized, systematic approach to procurement activities, prioritize assignments, pay close attention to detail, multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment. 
  • Energetic and takes initiative, accepts accountability and displays decisiveness, honesty and integrity.
